An entertaining and well cast character drama, part folk tale and part real-life legend.

Felix Bush (Robert Duvall) is a much-feared, elderly recluse with suspicion surrounding him in 1930s Tennessee. The townsfolk are surprised when he plans to hold a funeral party for himself while he is still alive. Frank Quinn (Bill Murray) owns the local funeral home and offers to help Felix organise the party. On the day long-held secrets are revealed involving a local widow Mattie Darrow (Sissy Spacek), Bush’s girlfriend in their youth, and her deceased sister. The town reexamines its prejudices and assumptions about the tortured soul of Felix.
The film is loosely based on a true story that occurred in Roane County, Tennessee in 1938.
