Enjoy a curated screening featuring a selection of Australia’s Top Short Films – the Award Winners and Director’s Choice of the 2021 St Kilda Film Festival. These films have not yet been classified and explore various themes and styles. Come and see why this is Australia’s longest running short film festival.
$10 entry or $30 for a 3 x film membership subscription. The entry fee includes supper and refreshments. This month supper will be served at intermission.
Due to State Government regulations all in attendance must be double vaccinated for Covid-19 and evidence must be shown at the door. In line with government and health guidelines, masks must be worn unless drinking or eating and where physical distancing cannot be maintained.

For Thursday Pictures at the Killara Centre Camperdown on Thursday 2 December 2021 we will screen Honeylandat 7.30pm followed by Fisherman’s Friends at 9.45pm. There will be an intermission with supper and refreshments. As always, the December screening is FREE. Bookings are NOT required.
Due to State Government regulations all in attendance must be double vaccinated for Covid-19 and evidence must be shown at the door. Face masks are recommended where physical distancing cannot be maintained.

Honeylanddocuments the life of Hatidže Muratova, a keeper of wild bees in a remote Macedonian village. Her livelihood is threatened by a neighbouring family who try to cultivate honey, but disregard the traditional methods. Honeyland offers an eye-opening perspective on experiences that should resonate even for audiences halfway around the world. The most awarded film from the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, winning the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize, a Special Jury Award for Cinematography, and another Special Jury Award for Originality. 2019 Macedonia (M) Documentary 1hr 29min Turkish with English subtitles
Fisherman’s Friends is the story of three co-workers from a London music company who go to the fishing village Port Isaac on the shores of Cornwall, to have a stag party for one of the three. When their plans go awry, they end up listening to a town concert given by some of the local fishermen. Wanting to still have some fun, the groom challenges one of his co-workers to sign the group to a record label. What ensues is good fun spiced with a little romance and a lot of good music. The film is based on a true story about ‘Fisherman’s Friends’, a group of Cornish fishermen from Port Isaac who were signed by Universal Records and achieved a top 10 hit with their debut album of traditional sea shanties. 2019 UK (M) Drama/Musical 1hr 52min

We are pleased to announce that Thursday Pictures will be back on Thursday 4 November 2021 at the Killara Centre Camperdown with a double bill of films.
At 7.30pm we will screen Firestarter, with supper at intermission. Then at 9.45pm we’ll show The Perfect Candidate. $10 for the night.

Here’s a synopsis of the films….
Firestarter: The Story of Bangarra, is a documentary about the birth and spectacular growth of Australia’s famed Bangarra Dance Theatre. Through the eyes of three young Aboriginal brothers – Stephen, David and Russell Page and company alumni, the film explores the loss and reclaiming of culture, the burden of intergenerational trauma and crucially, the extraordinary power of art as a messenger for social change and healing. The film documents a 30 year history featuring authentic storytelling, mesmerising technique and deeply moving and spectacular performances, combined with candid interviews and a treasure trove of archival footage. Directed by Wayne Blair (The Sapphires, Redfern Now) and Nel Minchin (Matilda & Me, Making Muriel), Firestarter features powerfully cinematic dance sequences – capturing the stunning visual language and heightened drama that Bangarra is famous for. 2020 Australia M Documentary 1hr 36min

The Perfect Candidate. Maryam (Mila Al Zahrani) is a dedicated and ambitious young Saudi doctor who lives at home with her two sisters and her father. En route to a medical conference, her travel plans are thwarted which leads her down an unlikely political path – running for city council. Despite the community’s struggle to accept her as the town’s first female candidate, her creative and ambitious campaign becomes a symbol for a larger movement. Directed by Haifaa al-Mansour (Wadjda, Mary Shelley, Nappily Ever After) the film centres the action on the lives of its female protagonists to tell a broader story of contemporary Saudi life. The Annual General Meeting of the Corangamite Film Society and ‘Thursday Pictures’ for Thursday 2 September 2021 is cancelled due to the Victorian state-wide lockdown.
We will notify of future screenings when they are possible.
The 2020/2021 Annual General Meeting of the Corangamite Film Society will be held on Thursday 2 September 2021 at 6.45pm at the Killara Centre, Camperdown. This will coincide with our September ‘Thursday Pictures’ film screening at 7.30pm (which will be the outstanding Macedonian documentary film ‘Honeyland’).
All are welcome to attend the AGM, and of course the film.

Thinking they can achieve a top ten hit, he tries to sign them up, but they are skeptical about the music business.

The Dry Australia (MA15+) 2020 Crime/Drama 1hr 57min Federal Agent Aaron Falk returns to his drought-stricken home town to attend the funeral of his childhood friend, Luke, who allegedly killed his wife and child before taking his own life. Falk reluctantly agrees to stay and investigate the crime and reopens the door to the unsolved death of a teenage girl 20 years before.

Gurrumul

A portrait of one of Australia’s most celebrated and important voices.
Celebrated by audiences at home and abroad, indigenous artist Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu was one of the most important and acclaimed voices to ever come out of Australia. Blind from birth, he found purpose and meaning through songs and music inspired by his community and country on Elcho Island in far North East Arnhem Land. ‘Gurrumul’ is a portrait of an artist on the brink of global reverence, and the struggles he and those closest to him faced in balancing that which mattered most to him and keeping the show on the road.
This film offers a rare insight into the life of the shy musician beyond the stage and the spotlight. It screens at 7.30pm on Thursday 1 July 2021 in the Killara Centre, Camperdown. Rated PG 1hr 36min.

Due to the Victorian state-wide ‘7 day circuit breaker’ lockdown which ends at midnight on Thursday 3 June 2021 – we will be unable to screen the Thursday Pictures film ‘Dingo’ planned for 7.30pm Thursday 3 June.
Hopefully we’ll get to see ‘Dingo’ later in the year, with all the great films we have lined up for the July – November Program. Fingers crossed…….
