Swan Song, the planned film for June, has been delayed.

The Thursday Pictures screening for 2 June 2022 is The Danish Girl.

Set in early 1920s Copenhagen, The Danish Girl is a fictitious love story loosely inspired by the lives of Danish artists Einar and Gerda Wegener. The two share a happy marriage, both working as artists, and while Einar receives acclaim for his landscapes, Gerda has not had much critical success with her portraits. One day Gerda playfully asks Einar to fill in for one of her female models and pose for her wearing stockings and shoes. This leads to Einar exploring his feminine side, which Gerda sees as fun, but becomes life-changing for Einar, who begins to realise that in reality he is ‘Lili’, a woman trapped in a man’s body, and that his real, true self should start living as a woman. 

The foundation of Lili and Gerda’s relationship evolves as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey despite prejudice, discrimination and public outcry. Lili tries to live her life to the full and undergoes highly experimental sex reassignment surgery that would make Lili Elbe a notable transgender pioneer.

Thursday 5 May 2022 – 7.30pm @ Killara Centre, Camperdown

On a hot day in outback Western Australia in 1969, legendary American jazz trumpeter Billy Cross (Miles Davis) performs an impromptu concert on the tarmac after his plane makes an unscheduled stop. Among the stunned audience is John Anderson (Daniel Scott), aged nine, who decides on the spot to become a trumpet player. Twenty years later, John (Colin Friels) is making a meagre living tracking dingoes and playing trumpet in a local band. He still dreams of joining Billy on trumpet and makes a pilgrimage to meet his idol.

This is an Australian classic from 1991 and features jazz great Miles Davis in his only acting appearance.

A highlight for fans of jazz and those who believe that dreams can come true, Dingo screens at 7.30pm on Thursday 5 May 2022 in the Killara Centre, Camperdown. Rated PG 1hr 49min.

Inspired by true events, The Divine Order is set in Switzerland in 1971 where, despite the worldwide social upheavals of the previous decade, women were still denied the right to vote. When Nora, an unassuming and dutiful housewife is forbidden by her husband to take a part-time job, her frustration leads to her becoming the poster child of her town’s suffragette movement. Her newfound celebrity brings humiliation, threats, and the potential end to her marriage, but, refusing to back down, she convinces the women in her village to go on strike. This shifts the scales of power politically and domestically, while awakening in Nora her own liberation.

Nine Days is an American supernatural drama film that ponders the improbability of our existence and the need to appreciate and celebrate the simple things in life. Will, a reclusive man living in an isolated house in the middle of a desert, determines the fate of human souls. He interviews candidates to decide if they will receive a new life on earth. Those who fail are given an experience of their choosing to enact before their existence is erased.

Enjoy a curated screening featuring a selection of Australia’s Top Short Films – the Award Winners and Director’s Choice of the 2021 St Kilda Film Festival. These films have not yet been classified and explore various themes and styles. Come and see why this is Australia’s longest running short film festival.

For Thursday Pictures at the Killara Centre Camperdown on Thursday 2 December 2021 we will screen Honeyland at 7.30pm followed by Fisherman’s Friends at 9.45pm. There will be an intermission with supper and refreshments.
As always, the December screening is FREE. Bookings are NOT required.

Honeyland documents the life of Hatidže Muratova, a keeper of wild bees in a remote Macedonian village. Her livelihood is threatened by a neighbouring family who try to cultivate honey, but disregard the traditional methods. Honeyland offers an eye-opening perspective on experiences that should resonate even for audiences halfway around the world. The most awarded film from the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, winning the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize, a Special Jury Award for Cinematography, and another Special Jury Award for Originality.

Fisherman’s Friends is the story of three co-workers from a London music company who go to the fishing village Port Isaac on the shores of Cornwall, to have a stag party for one of the three. When their plans go awry, they end up listening to a town concert given by some of the local fishermen. Wanting to still have some fun, the groom challenges one of his co-workers to sign the group to a record label. What ensues is good fun spiced with a little romance and a lot of good music. The film is based on a true story about ‘Fisherman’s Friends’, a group of Cornish fishermen from Port Isaac who were signed by Universal Records and achieved a top 10 hit with their debut album of traditional sea shanties. 2019 UK (M) Drama/Musical 1hr 52min

We are pleased to announce that Thursday Pictures will be back on Thursday 4 November 2021 at the Killara Centre Camperdown with a double bill of films.

At 7.30pm we will screen Firestarter, with supper at intermission. Then at 9.45pm we’ll show The Perfect Candidate. 
$10 for the night.

Firestarter: The Story of Bangarra, is a documentary about the birth and spectacular growth of Australia’s famed Bangarra Dance Theatre. Through the eyes of three young Aboriginal brothers – Stephen, David and Russell Page and company alumni, the film explores the loss and reclaiming of culture, the burden of intergenerational trauma and crucially, the extraordinary power of art as a messenger for social change and healing. The film documents a 30 year history featuring authentic storytelling, mesmerising technique and deeply moving and spectacular performances, combined with candid interviews and a treasure trove of archival footage. The Perfect Candidate. Maryam (Mila Al Zahrani) is a dedicated and ambitious young Saudi doctor who lives at home with her two sisters and her father. En route to a medical conference, her travel plans are thwarted which leads her down an unlikely political path – running for city council. Despite the community’s struggle to accept her as the town’s first female candidate, her creative and ambitious campaign becomes a symbol for a larger movement. Directed by Haifaa al-Mansour (Wadjda, Mary Shelley, Nappily Ever After) the film centres the action on the lives of its female protagonists to tell a broader story of contemporary Saudi life.
