Thursday Pictures – THE BREAKER UPPERERS

Thursday 5 December 2024 – 7.30pm @ Killara Centre, Camperdown

Our gift to you…  our FREE film for December will be THE BREAKER UPPERERS.

The Breaker Upperers is a 2018 New Zealand romantic-comedy written and directed by Madeleine Sami and Jackie van Beek.

The film is a quirky, irreverent take on love, relationships, and breakups.

The story revolves around two women, Mel (Madeleine Sami) and Jen (Jackie van Beek), who run a small-time business specialising in breaking up couples too afraid or lazy to do it themselves.

The duo has a strong bond, rooted in their mutual cynicism about love after their own romantic failures.

Their methods are unconventional and often outrageous, ranging from impersonating police officers to staging dramatic infidelities.

The film is a blend of deadpan humour, slapstick, and heartfelt moments.

It explores themes of friendship, vulnerability, and the absurdities of modern relationships, all delivered with a distinct Kiwi comedic sensibility.

THE BREAKER UPPERERS screens at 7.30pm on Thursday 5 December 2024 in the Killara Centre, Camperdown.  1hr 30 / Comedy / M / New Zealand / English language

FREE entry (including supper and refreshments after the screening).

Thursday Pictures for NAIDOC Week – WE ARE STILL HERE

Thursday 4 July 2024 – 7.30pm @ Killara Centre, Camperdown

WE ARE STILL HERE is an Australian-New Zealand anthology film released in 2022. Created as a response to the 250th anniversary of the second voyage of James Cook to Australia in 1772, the project consists of eight interwoven short films by Indigenous Australian and Māori filmmakers about the impact of settler colonialism on the region’s indigenous cultures. The films were directed by Beck Cole, Dena Curtis, Tracey Rigney, Danielle MacLean, Tim Worrall, Renae Maihi, Miki Magasiva, Mario Gaoa, Richard Curtis and Chantelle Burgoyne.

The film traverses 1000 years from past, present, and future to explore stories of kinship, loss, grief, and resilience. These tales cover the timeframe from when Captain James Cook first made contact with people in the Austral-Pacific Islands region, to a post-apocalyptic wasteland, in the year 2274.

Ultimately, the film shows the strength of love and hope to overcome shared traumas that Indigenous people from Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific have continued to face. In spite of colonialism, racism, imperialism and the attempted erasure of Indigenous lives, WE ARE STILL HERE.

As a special NAIDOC week screening, the Corangamite Film Society has invited Brett Clarke to do a Welcome to Country. Brett will also show his short film ‘Ngakee Wanga Toompa – Look Listen Feel’.

WE ARE STILL HERE screens at 7.30pm on Thursday 4 July 2024 in the Killara Centre, Camperdown. Rated M 1hr 30min

$10 entry for guests or $30 for a 3 x film membership subscription. The entry fee includes supper and refreshments after the screening. No bookings required, just arrive before 7.30pm at the Killara Centre, Camperdown.

Thursday Pictures – THE GIANTS

Thursday 2 May 2024 – 7.30pm @ Killara Centre, Camperdown

THE GIANTS explores the intertwined fates of trees and humans in a poetic portrait of environmentalist Bob Brown and the Forest. Brown’s trailblazing life helps narrate the exhilarating rise of the environmental movement in Australia. From a seedling to forest elder, the film is a masterclass that draws on Brown’s 50 years of inspiring activism, from the Franklin campaign for Tasmania’s last wild river, to today’s battle for the Tarkine rainforest. Told in Bob’s own words, his story is interwoven with the extraordinary life cycle of Australia’s giant trees, brought to the screen with stunning cinematography and immersive forest landscapes. The film combines monumental ‘tree portraits’ and animated ‘3D forest scans’ with spine-tingling sound design and a powerful soundtrack featuring human vocals – to literally give a voice to these trees.

One of Australia’s most successful documentaries of 2023, THE GIANTS aims to ignite a conversation about the right of the Forest to exist – and to inspire us to save it. The film inspired national rallies, put deforestation on the political agenda, and mobilised countless individuals and community groups to stand up for forests.

THE GIANTS screens at 7.30pm on Thursday 2 May 2024 in the Killara Centre, Camperdown. Rated M 1hr 53min. From Australia in 2023, Documentary/Animation/Biography.

Thursday Pictures – WOMEN TALKING

Thursday 4 April 2024 – 7.30pm @ Killara Centre, Camperdown

CONTENT WARNING: This story discusses sexual assault.

The 2022 film WOMEN TALKING, written and directed by Sarah Polley, is based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Canadian writer Miriam Toews, who describes the novel as “an imagined response to real events”. The real events occurred between 2005 and 2009 when over 100 women and girls living in Manitoba Colony, a remote and isolated Mennonite community in Bolivia, woke up to discover that they had been raped in their sleep. The attacks were denied or dismissed by the exclusively male elders of the colony, as the work of ghosts, or Satan, or that the women were lying to get attention. Finally it was revealed that a group of men from the colony were spraying animal anaesthetic to sedate entire households in order to sexually assault the women and girls.

While the men of the colony are away to post bail for the rapists, the women meet in secret to plot their response to the systemic male violence. Whether to stay and do nothing, stay and fight, or leave the colony. The women must grapple with the fundamentals of their faith and their lack of power and freedom within it. How do the women maintain their faith in light of the abuse, and will they be denied entry into heaven if they refuse to forgive their offenders?

The film features an ensemble cast that includes Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Judith Ivey, Ben Whishaw, and Frances McDormand, who also served as a producer on the film.

WOMEN TALKING screens at 7.30pm on Thursday 4 April 2024 in the Killara Centre, Camperdown. USA Rated M 1hr 44min

$10 entry for guests or $30 for a 3 x film membership subscription. The entry fee includes supper and refreshments after the screening. No bookings required, just arrive before 7.30pm at the Killara Centre, Camperdown.
