Thursday Pictures – ANATOMY OF A FALL

Thursday 3 October 2024 – 7.30pm @ Killara Centre, Camperdown

ANATOMY OF A FALL is a 2023 French legal drama film directed by Justine Triet from a screenplay she co-wrote with Arthur Harari.

In an isolated mountain chalet in a remote town in the French Alps, German novelist Sandra Voyter, her university lecturer husband Samuel Maleski, and their eleven-year-old son Daniel have lived a secluded life for the past year. When Samuel is found dead in the snow below their chalet, the police question whether he was murdered or committed suicide. Samuel’s suspicious death is presumed murder, and Sandra becomes the main suspect. Daniel faces a moral dilemma as the main witness.

What follows is an investigation into the circumstances of Samuel’s death and an unsettling psychological journey into the depths of Sandra and Samuel’s conflicted relationship. Daniel is caught in the middle: between the trial and their home life.

ANATOMY OF A FALL premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on 21 May 2023, where it won the Palme d’Or and the Palm Dog Award and competed for the Queer Palm. It won six awards at the 49th César Awards, including Best Film, and also received five nominations at the 96th Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director (Triet), Best Actress (Hüller), and won Best Original Screenplay.
