Thursday Pictures for NAIDOC Week – WE ARE STILL HERE

Thursday 4 July 2024 – 7.30pm @ Killara Centre, Camperdown

WE ARE STILL HERE is an Australian-New Zealand anthology film released in 2022. Created as a response to the 250th anniversary of the second voyage of James Cook to Australia in 1772, the project consists of eight interwoven short films by Indigenous Australian and Māori filmmakers about the impact of settler colonialism on the region’s indigenous cultures. The films were directed by Beck Cole, Dena Curtis, Tracey Rigney, Danielle MacLean, Tim Worrall, Renae Maihi, Miki Magasiva, Mario Gaoa, Richard Curtis and Chantelle Burgoyne.

The film traverses 1000 years from past, present, and future to explore stories of kinship, loss, grief, and resilience. These tales cover the timeframe from when Captain James Cook first made contact with people in the Austral-Pacific Islands region, to a post-apocalyptic wasteland, in the year 2274.

Ultimately, the film shows the strength of love and hope to overcome shared traumas that Indigenous people from Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific have continued to face. In spite of colonialism, racism, imperialism and the attempted erasure of Indigenous lives, WE ARE STILL HERE.

As a special NAIDOC week screening, the Corangamite Film Society has invited Brett Clarke to do a Welcome to Country. Brett will also show his short film ‘Ngakee Wanga Toompa – Look Listen Feel’.

WE ARE STILL HERE screens at 7.30pm on Thursday 4 July 2024 in the Killara Centre, Camperdown. Rated M 1hr 30min
